Background

Sustainable Development refers to "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed “Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” as a new development agenda which contains 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and associated targets. The implementation and monitoring of these SDGs depend largely on the availability of reliable geospatial information collected at local, national and global levels.
Land cover and change reflects the human domination of the earth and influences the energy balance, carbon budget, hydrological cycle, etc. During the past twenty years, numerous land-cover data products have been developed at global, national and regional levels. In September 2014, a 30m-resolution global land cover (GLC) dataset, GlobeLand30, has been made available free of charge to the international community. Users from more than 110 countries have downloaded GlobeLand3 data set, and use it for a variety of societal needs, ranging from climate chance modeling, natural resources management, environmental studies, urban planning, and earth system simulation to sustainable development. One of the cutting edge applications is to derive the indicators for the SDGs.
